I offer pre-marital counseling using Prepare/Enrich. I find that it is a helpful resource in assessing and supporting well-being in relationships. While it can be used by clergy working with couples in a church setting, it is not necessarily a "Christian" or "religious" program. I am committed to working with people of all backgrounds in coupled relationships, and I am an advocate for marriage between any two people who want to work toward a healthy, sustaining life together.
I begin with an initial session to get to know you and your partner, and to orient you to Prepare/Enrich. During that first week (outside of our session), you and your partner complete an online inventory. I receive the results and review them; then, at our next appointment, discuss how we might go forward based on the results and your interests and needs.
I recommend at least five additional sessions. That allows me to be the most helpful to you — following the initial session, four or more sessions can focus on content (e.g. communication, finances, families), and a final session helps transition from counseling into the broader context of wedding preparations and your life together. The actual number is flexible.
The pre-marital counseling I offer is not diagnostic and does not focus on mental health concerns. When these concerns are identified in pre-marital counseling, I work with couples to consider what kind of follow-up would be most helpful. Because pre-marital counseling is not the same as counseling or psychotherapy to address mental health, it is not appropriate to bill for insurance benefits. I charge an initial fee of $165 which covers the online inventory, two couple's workbooks, and the initial session.. The charge for subsequent sessions is $135/session.
